Lesson 4: Community — You Cannot Do This Alone
Community — You Cannot Do This Alone
No significant thing in human history was built by one person alone. Not a single one. Behind every famous leader is a team, a network, a community that made the work possible. The myth of the lone genius is a great story and a terrible strategy.
Building Community vs. Building an Audience
Audience: People who consume what you produce. They follow, watch, like. Passive relationship. Gone when you stop producing.
Community: People who contribute to a shared purpose. They build alongside you. They stay when things get hard.
Legacy leaders build community. Not followings.
Generosity as Strategy
The fastest way to build a community is to give more than you take. Share knowledge. Make introductions. Celebrate others publicly. Help people without keeping score. People remember who invested in them before they had anything to offer in return.
Try This Today
- Make a list of five people who challenge you to grow. How often do you actually spend time with them?
- Do something generous for someone in your community this week with no expectation of return
- Think about a community you are part of. What do you contribute vs. consume?
