Lesson 2: Impact Over Image
Impact Over Image
Here is the trap that gets almost every young leader: optimizing for how they look instead of what they actually do. They spend energy on appearing impressive rather than being effective. Legacy leadership is the opposite. It is playing a longer game where your reputation is built on what you actually produced.
The Instagram Problem
Social media rewards image over impact by design. The most photogenic version of your work gets more attention than the most effective version. Real impact is often invisible on camera. The conversation that changed someone direction does not photograph well. It matters more.
Measuring Real Impact
Ask these questions about anything you do: Did something actually improve, or does it just look like it improved? Are the people I am serving better off? Would this still exist and matter if I stopped posting about it?
Service vs. Performance
Service: you do the thing because the thing needs doing. Performance: you do the thing because people are watching. Legacy leaders learn to serve even when the audience is small. Especially then. That is when you find out what you are actually made of.
Try This Today
- Do one helpful thing today that you do not tell anyone about
- Audit something you are working on: is it optimized for impact or for appearance?
- Name one leader you respect whose impact you know about because of what they built, not how they presented themselves
