Lesson 5: Cybersecurity Is Everyone Job

Cybersecurity Is Everyone Job

You do not have to be a hacker to understand cybersecurity. The weakest link in any security system is almost always a human making a bad decision. That bad decision is usually clicking something they should not have, using a password like password123, or trusting someone they should not trust online.

The Most Common Attacks

Phishing: A fake email pretending to be someone trustworthy to get your password. The email looks real. The link looks real. The page looks real. Always check the actual email address, not just the display name.

Social engineering: Manipulating people instead of systems. No legitimate IT person ever needs your password. Ever.

Weak passwords: If your password is a word in the dictionary or a date, it is not a password. It is a welcome mat.

The Basics That Actually Work

  • Use a password manager with long, random, unique passwords for every account
  • Turn on two-factor authentication everywhere you can
  • If an email creates urgency or fear, slow down, that is the trick
  • Keep software updated, most attacks exploit vulnerabilities that updates already fixed

Try This Today

  • Check if your passwords have been in a data breach at haveibeenpwned.com
  • Turn on two-factor authentication for your most important account
  • Google your own name and see what your digital footprint actually looks like
